NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Friday, August 29, 2014 INCIDENTS Hot Springs NP Rangers Assist In Shooting Incident With Multiple Victims Rangers John Hughes and Jeff Johnson responded to a report of gunfire at a housing project located adjacent to the park on August 20th. Hughes arrived on scene within 45 seconds. He found two people suffering from gunshot wounds about 75 yards apart from each other - the first had been hit in the leg and had a severed femoral that was bleeding profusely, the second had been hit in the head. Numerous shell casings were scattered throughout the area along with currency and packets that appeared to contain illegal drugs. A third person was then found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. A fourth person had also been shot and was last seen running from the scene, covered in blood. The area was immediately cordoned off. Officers from several agencies soon arrived to assist. A lifesaving tourniquet was placed on the victim with the femoral artery wound by a local police officer. Other rangers were called in to assist in searching for possible additional shooters. The investigation revealed that the shooting was a result of a drug deal-robbery gone bad. All of the shooting victims were reportedly involved in this incident. Two remain in critical condition and a third is listed in serious condition. The fourth shooting victim has not been found, but his residence was the scene of a drive-by shooting following this incident. The park resumed normal activities later that day. [John Hughes, Chief Ranger] Cuyahoga Valley NP Search Underway For Missing Woman A search is in progress for a woman who's been missing for more than a week and is believed to be in the park. H.S.'s vehicle was found in Boston Store Visitor Center parking lot around midnight on Thursday, August 21st, after Eastlake Police Department issued an alert reporting her missing. Rangers started a search at that time which was soon joined by several other agencies. It included ground teams with search dogs, horse patrols, boats on the Cuyahoga River, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Over 150 people participated in operations on Saturday alone. The search was originally managed under a unified incident command that included the National Park Service, Valley Fire Department, and Brecksville Fire Department. It has since been scaled back and is now being managed by an NPS team (Chris Ryan, IC).
