The White House - President Obama has directed that all U.S. flags be lowered to half staff from sunrise to sunset today in observance of Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. A moment of silence will also be held at 8:46 a.m. EDT.


San Juan Island NHP - Members of the Lummi Nation for the first time in decades brought ceremony and dance to San Juan Island this summer as part of their project to reintroduce traditional fishing practices to Lummi youth, launching from park shores.


Today's Almanac - A strong cold front pushing into the United States from Canada will bring much cooler air to the center of the country and snow to the northern Rockies. Red flag warnings are up in the Northwest.


Air Resources Division - The Air Resources Division has prepared a guidance document for determining if visual impact assessments prepared for renewable energy projects adequately describe the impacts to scenic views from parks.


Heritage Preservation Assistance Programs - Along with protecting cultural and natural resources, NHAs provide access to an array of recreational opportunities. Last year alone, NHAs distributed over $3 million in grants for recreation projects and developed 1133 new miles of on and off road trails.


Midwest Region - The National Park Service and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services partnered on a naturalization ceremony that was held at Midwest Regional Office on August 21st.


Captain John Smith Chesapeake NHT - More than 150 people celebrated the addition of canoe-in campsites along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail at Virginia's Caledon State Park in an event on August 22nd.


Denver Service Center - Karl von Rosenberg, currently a program manager in design and construction for Denver Service Center, will retire on September 30th following nearly 30 years of government service, 26 of those with the NPS.


Lowell NHP - Cindy Laurenza of Lowell National Historical Park has retired following 34 years with the National Park Service. She has been with the park since it was established.
