NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Thursday, October 9, 2014 INCIDENTS William Howard Taft NHS Thieves Steal Copper From Visitor Center HVAC System Because of rising temperatures in the park visitor center on September 16th, an employee went to check the HVAC system and discovered that the two exterior cooling units had been completely destroyed sometime the night before. The outer casings of the units were damaged and virtually all other materials related to the HVAC had been cut away and taken, particularly components made containing copper. At the time, there was nothing to physically prevent anyone from accessing the units or the electrical shutoffs; this has now been corrected in the emergency replacement contract. Damages and replacement costs totaled $28,000. Park staff and law enforcement rangers from Hopewell Culture NHP and Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP have made plans for improving video surveillance at the site. The Cincinnati Police Department is leading the investigation.
