NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Wednesday, October 15, 2014 INCIDENTS Crater Lake NP Contract Employee Injured In Equipment Rollover Accident On August 6th, rangers responded to a report of an equipment rollover a half mile west of the Annie Springs Entrance Station on Highway 62 in the park. An employee of a contractor conducting a chip seal project was operating a pneumatic asphalt compactor when he drove too near the edge of the roadway. The compactor rolled onto its side on the road shoulder. The operator jumped from the compactor as it rolled and landed on the paved road surface, suffering a broken arm and dislocated elbow. He was transported by ambulance to Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, where he underwent surgery. The agreement will allow the company's harvest of shellfish in Drakes Estero to continue until December 31st, at which point it will permanently close all of its operations. Today's Almanac - Tropical Storm Ana in the Pacific Ocean is forecast to become a hurricane and pass near or over the Hawaiian Islands this weekend. Strong thunderstorms are possible today in the Midwest, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Social Sciences Program - A five-year socioeconomic research and analysis contract has been awarded to Resource Systems Group, Inc. This contract offers the NPS a fast track to meet the full breadth of visitor use and social science research and analysis needs of the agency. Office of Communications - On October 16th, from 1 to 2 pm ET, the NPS web team will hold the second servicewide call in what will be monthly web update calls between now and the NPS centennial in 2016. This month the focus will be on centennial plans for NPS.gov. Partnerships and Visitor Experience Directorate - The Gettysburg Foundation has received a 2014 Director's Partnership Award for its philanthropy, stewardship, and active friends group, which impacts thousands of Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site visitors every day. Youth Programs Division - The division recently sponsored a Servicewide webinar that provided participants with an overview of the systematic process for evaluating a program's effectiveness using generally-accepted data gathering and analysis techniques. Statue of Liberty NM/Ellis Island NM - Rob Parrish, a five year National Park Service veteran, has been selected as project manager at the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island.
