NEWS AND NOTES
Andrew Johnson National Historic Site (TN)
Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address Commemorated
On March 4th, the sesquicentennial anniversary of President Lincoln's 1865 inauguration, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site recreated his celebrated Second Inaugural Address, with Andrew Johnson also sharing words as he became the new vice president.
President Lincoln won reelection to a second term with Andrew Johnson running as vice president on the National Union ticket. The pro-war National Union ticket set aside traditional political methodology by featuring a Republican president joining forces with a southern Democratic running mate.
In this way, Abraham Lincoln exemplified the words that he would use in his famous second inaugural speech. He was intent on bringing the two sections of the country together again "with malice toward none."
Nearly 200 people came to the lawn of the Andrew Johnson Homestead to participate in the once-in-a-lifetime commemoration of the famous event, sponsored by the park, the United States Postal Service, the Lincoln Project, and the Andrew Johnson Heritage Association.
The post office issued a special pictorial postmark, highly valued by collectors, to mark the 150th anniversary.
Two inches by four inches, the postmark features images of Lincoln and Johnson, and reads: "National Union Party Station - Inauguration Day 1865, President Abraham Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson - 150 Years, March 4, 2015, Greeneville, TN 37743, Hometown of the Vice President - 'With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right....'"
A temporary philatelic station was set up at the Andrew Johnson Homestead and representatives of the USPS postmarked mail and collectible materials. Stamps and a special commemorative cachet were available.
Andrew Johnson was represented by experienced NPS interpreter Daniel Luther. Award-winning Abraham Lincoln presenter Chris Small delivered the Second Inaugural Address. Refreshments for the community followed the event.
