BOTANICAL NOTE

A Prickly Pear Cactus, Opuntia sp., recently collected near Coconino Wash, demonstrated fully the adaptation of the root system of this species to the arid climate. Although the plant above the roots was comparatively small (five and one half inches high) and was composed of only two main and five secondary joints, its root system extended for the remarkable distance of five feet eleven inches.
