BROCKMAN'S ACHIEVEMENTS NOTED BY SUPERINTENDENT

This issue and the two succeeding issues of Nature Notes go to press under remote control supervision of C. Frank Brockman, park naturalist, who now is attending Yale Graduate School.

Attained by the efforts of Dr. H. C. Bryant, associate director of the National Park Service, Brockman was awarded a year's fellowship for graduate study in the forestry school at the eastern university. His outstanding work in the park during the past seven years earned him the scholarship.

Complimenting the park naturalist, Doctor Bryant recently said, "We are gratified by the unceasing efforts of Brockman to gather additional scientific information concerning Mount Rainier National Park." The assistant director explained, "It is the desire of the Park Service to know more about each park than does anyone else. Only with such an understanding of the phenomena are we able to best present to visitors the interesting features of each recreation area."

Outstanding among Brockman's accomplishments is the Park Encyclopedia, a reference manual of untold value. In this volume is a well rounded discussion of the scientific features and of the history of this park. Although Brockman is continually elaborating the works, it now offers by far the most complete factual information concerning Mount Rainier.

Brockman has also contributed worth while information of glacial activity, ferns and forests, and other park features and has organized a much praised educational program for sum mer park visitors. His articles and photographs of park features have appeared in many publications.

We at Mount Rainier will miss the leadership and cooperation of Brockman during his nine months leave. However, we realize the Park Service will gain materially by the broaden ing of Brockman's experiences by his studies and experiments this winter at Yale.
