Hypothetical List

The following list of birds covers those that might at any time be recorded or happen in the park, but have not as yet been authentically recorded:

A.O.U. 180 Whistling Swan (Cygnus columbianus) At times follows the Cascade Range in migration.
172 Common Canada Goose (Branta e. canadensis) Migrates east of the Cascades.
172d Lesser Canada Goose (Branta canadensis leucopareia) Undoubtedly passes over the park in migration.
169 Lesser Snow Goose (Chen h. hyperborea) Undoubtedly passes over the park in migration.
137 Baldpate (Mareca americana) Should occur in the park in fall migration.
144 Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) Might come up our rivers in fall.
150 Ring-necked Duck (Nyroca collaris) Frequents fresh-water lakes in migration.
149 Lesser Scaup Duck (Nyroca affinis) Should appear in fall migration.
153 Buffle-head (Charitonetta albeola) Should appear in fall migration.
347a American Rough-leg (Buteo lagopus s-johannis) Migrant east of the Cascades; should visit us.
364 Osprey (Pandion haliaetus carolinensis) Breeds in western Washington; should visit the park lakes.
205 Little Brown Crane (Grus c. canadensis) Migrates from Alaska; should stop on the mountain meadows.
254 Greater Yellow-legs (Totanus melanoleucus) Should stop in fall migration.
247 Western Sandpiper (Ereunetes maurii) Should stop in fall migration.
54 Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) Migrates over the mountains to eastern Washington to breed.
316a Western Mourning Dove (Zenaidura macroura marinella) Common east of the Cascades; should occur on north and east sides.
375b Arctic Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus subarcticus) May appear from the north in winter.
375 Northwestern Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus lagophonus) Birds with lighter markings migrate westward through the Cascades from eastern Washington.
377a American Hawk-owl (Surnia ulula caparech) Should visit the park in winter.
370 Great Gray Owl (Scotiaptex n. nebulosa) Only a question of time until this bird is recorded in the park.
367 Short-eared Owl (Asio f. flamneus) Should occur on north and east sides in fall.
418 Nuttall's Poor-will (Phalaenoptilus n. nuttalli) Breeds on the eastern slopes of the Cascades.
399 Northern White-headed Woodpecker (Dryobates a. albolarvatus) Breeds on eastern slopes; should wander into the park.
444 Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus) Common in eastern Washington and of regular but rare occurrance on the west side.
447 Arkansas Kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis) Should also visit the east side of the park.
468 Hammond's Flycatcher (Empidonax hammondi) Not as yet recorded, but should be.
469 Wright's Flycatcher (Empidonax wrighti) May appear at any time in summer.
462 Western Wood Pewee (Myiochanes r. richardsoni) Breeds in Blewitt Pass; might occur here.
612 Northern Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon a. albifrons) Should appear in fall migration.
485a Gray Jay (Parisoreus obscurus griseus) Many birds occurring on the east side may be mixed within this bird from the eastern slopes.
726d Sierra Creeper (Certhia familiaris zelotes) Breeds on eastern slopes of the Cascades; might occur on east side of park in fall and winter.
721a Western House Wren (Troglodytes aedon parkmani) No substantial records; one old sight record at Longmire and another sight record at Paradise, both far from natural range.
761a Western Robin (Turdis migratoris propinquus) Should occur in very late fall as a migrant.
759 Alaska Hermit Thrush (Hylocichla g. guttata) Migrates along west side of the Cascades.
759c Dwarf Hermit Thrush (Hylocichla guttata nanus) Migrates along west side of the Cascades.
749 Western Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Corthylio e. calendula) Breeds on eastern slopes; should occur in eastern sections of the park.
618 Bohemian Waxwing (Bombycilla garrula pallidiceps) Should visit us in winter.
621a Northwestern Shrike (Lanius borealis invictus) Fall migrant between Mountain and coast.
645a Calaveras Warbler (Vermivora ruficapilla ridgwayi) Perhaps a breeding bird in east and north sections.
655 Myrtle Warbler (Dendroica coronati) Should occur in migrations.
665 Black-throated Gray Warbler (Dendroica nigrescens) No records, but it should be here in fall migrations.
515c Alaska Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator alscensis) Should appear in winter.
515a Rocky Mountain Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator montana) Should appear in winter.
528 Common Redpoll (Acanthis l. linaria) Abundant winter visitor in eastern Washington; should occur here.
585a Shumigan Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliaca unalaschensis)
585k Valdez Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliaca sinuosa)
585g Townsend Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliace townsendi)
585f Kodiak Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliaca insularis)
585l Yakutat Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliaca annectens)
These sparrows breed north of us and pass through in migration to California; all might occur here in fall migrations.

While any of the above birds may occur in the park, it will take a long time before many of them are recorded, owing to the high altitude, mountainous country and deep snows in winter and spring.
