Stuart M. Barnette, a native of Dover, Delaware, was a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy and won an architectural degree at Massachusetts Tech and a diploma at the Ecole des Beaux Arts Americaine in Fontainebleau, France. In France, England and Holland he studied the origins of European influences on early American architecture, and residence in New England, the Middle Atlantic States and the South has afforded him an opportunity for examining sectional architectural characteristics. He entered the Service in 1934 at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park, was transferred to Washington to assist in the Historic Sites Survey, and later was assigned to his present duties as Assistant Architect in the Richmond office.

Hugh R. Awtrey says he was born 36 years ago at Marietta, Georgia, in sight of the present Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Site, received degrees from Mercer University (Georgia) and the University of Paris, and worked on newspapers in France, where he lived for five years. He taught college French, returned to the newspaper field as political and editorial writer, entered the Service in 1936 in the old Region IV (Atlanta) office and soon was transferred to Richmond as Associate Recreational Planner.
