Figure 5. Old Bedlam, built by Lieutenant
Woodbury (1849-1850), was on the verge of collapse when this photograph
was taken by architects from the Omaha Regional Office (NPS) for the
Historic American Buildings Survey.

Figure 6. Comprehensive restoration of Old
Bedlam by the National Park Service began in the 1960s. The work
included new foundations, steel framing to reinforce ancient timbers,
replacement of rotted and missing elements, and reconstruction of flared
kitchen wings, verandas and exterior stairways.
