Old Bedlam, mentioned prominently in romantic
novels of the period, was long used as quarters for the unmarried
officers. The name was probably descriptive of its use as the center of
social activities. Work was begun on this structure in 1849. This
photograph was made by the U. S. A. Signal Corps in the 1880's.
