FORT LARNED Commanding Officer's Quarters (HS-8) Historic Structure Report Historic Furnishing Study

Located on the northwest quarter of sec. 32, township 21 south, range 17 west, in Pawnee County, Kansas, Fort Larned represents one of the first military outposts in the Great Plains. Soldiers from the post served to protect communication routes and suppress the Indian tribes on the southern Great Plains to allow the advancement of Anglo civilization. The commanding officer's quarters housed the military leader responsible for overseeing the unit's operation and coordination within the frontier command. Both the fort and the commanding officer's quarters are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This report is concerned with the commanding officer's quarters (HS-8) at Fort Larned and its purpose is to provide information for its preservation. The structure is of the first order of significance. The proposed treatment is the restoration of this structure to its appearance in 1867-68, during the United States Army's occupancy of that fort. Since the quarters is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, restoration and refurnishing activities are subject to section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and its implementing procedures.
