A great many people contributed much to the preparation of this report. Mr. Nyle Miller and his staff made available the resources of the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka. Mayor Frank Doherty and many citizens of Fort Scott graciously assisted me in many ways. Thanks are extended to Mrs. Margaret Mercer, Fort Scott, who over the months kept me informed on local events, including the news of the fire that struck Officers Quarters No. 1. I should also like to thank Mr. Gerald R. Scott, Executive Director, Urban Renewal Agency, Fort Scott, who shared his vast knowledge of local history; Mr. Robert Galvin, a long-time student of the Civil War period at Fort Scott; and Mr. Joseph L.
