FOREWORD As the National Park Service celebrates its Diamond Jubilee we are reminded of all of the contributions made by the men and women who over the years have protected and preserved our national treasures. The ranger force has held a mystique all its own since the early days in Yellowstone. There have been many books written about the activities and accomplishments of rangers in the parks, but none of these works has tackled the sometimes hazy history of the uniforms and insignia they wear. The "National Park Service Uniforms" series, of which this is the first volume, fills that gap and should be of great value to scholars studying the history and culture of the Service. David G.
