STEPHEN F. ARNO is an Associate Plant Ecologist on the Forest Ecosystems research work unit at Missoula. He earned a B. S. in forestry at Washington State University and a master's degree and a Ph.D. in forestry and plant science at the University of Montana before joining the USDA Forest Service in 1970. This study was supported by the Fire in Multiple Use Management Research, Development, and Application Program headquartered at the Northern Forest Fire Laboratory in Missoula.
