Description:US Marines approach burning building near Okinawa capital. US Marines battling the Japanese near Naha, capital of Okinawa, move in on a building set afire to force out Japanese snipers. Marines and infantrymen of the US tenth army landed on Okinawa, main island of the Ryukyu chain on March 31, 1945. By May 17, they controlled three quarters of the island, 375 miles from Japan. They were meeting fierce resistance in attempts to penetrate southern defense line. Seventy five percent of Japanese war potential would be within range of the US B-17 bombers and Thunderbolt and Mustang fighter planes flying from Okinawa. May 22, 1945.
