Description:US marines inch forward on Okinawa. Two US Marines (foreground), armed with bazooka, (rocket firing infantry weapon) inch their way up a hill two miles north of Naha, capital of Okinawa. With the Americans in possession of ¾ of Okinawa, the Japanese were offering bitter and costly resistance along their southern defense line from Naha through Shuri to Yonabaru. Bases on Okinawa, which is only 375 miles from Japan would enable US B-29 super fortresses to increase their bomb load by one and a half tons so they could carry ten tons in attacks on Japans industrial areas. May 23, 1945. (41220-FMC, National Archives).
