Description: | This unusual shot shows, in the distance, a company of Marines in a perilous position on a bare brown hillside on Chonito ridge on Asan beach. In full view of the beach, these Marines are pinned down by enemy mortar and machine gun fire. The group can not move. The dead and injured can be seen among them. Japanese fire from strong positions near the top of the ridge prevented them from moving in any direction. This photo was taken on the second day of invasion, and the Marines had been pinned down since the day before. The living and dead are strewn up and down the draw. Hospital corpsman, trying to get the wounded out, were either killed, wounded or pinned down with the Marines. July 22, 1944, Guam. (USMC #87287) |
