Description:47 Japanese soldiers and sailors finally gave up on 1 December 1945 after hiding out in the jungles and caves of Saipan for almost 17 months. They were the last of the once mighty force of 30,000 Japanese military personnel either killed or captured since out forces invaded Saipan on June 15, 1944. 16,000 Japanese were left behind and were told that the Japanese Imperial Army would return to retake Saipan. Instead everyone was killed or taken prisoner (National Archive 80-G-495895)
