Summary:
At 0930 on 12/11, the pilot of a small private plane reported to FAA
that he was icing up; the plane disappeared from their scopes shortly
thereafter. The weather on Thursday and Friday was too bad to mount a
search. The plane was finally found yesterday. The pilot had apparently
attempted to land on the lake ice, but had broken through. His
passenger, a Michigan state police sergeant, was able to get out and
swim to shore, but died of exposure; divers are searching the lake for
the pilot. Four rangers are on the island assisting state police and
sheriff's officers in the search.
