Follow-up Report
Synopsis of 87-38 and 87-38A: Mr. L.S. hiked into the park's back country on
April 3rd. He was last seen on April 5th. A major search was initiated on
April 7th. His backpack was found on April 8th, and searchers closed in on
the immediately surrounding area.
Mr. L.S.'s body was spotted from the air by a National Guard plane at 2 pm
on Sunday, April 12th. Ground teams arrived at the scene about 2 hours
later to carry out the body.
A likely scenario is that L.S., who was found in light clothing and shorts,
was suffering from hypothermia, dropped his pack and wandered to the cliff
edge above Lummis Canyon, where he fell 250' to his death. A coroner's
report is pending.
Approximately 65 searchers were in the field through the weekend, including
both dog and horse teams.

Summary:
Body Recovered
An unidentified male was found caught in trot lines on the Rio Grande by
fisherman. Rangers arrived on the scene early in the afternoon. Although
the body had been in the river from four to seven days and was badly
decomposed, it was still possible to determine that there was a probable
bullet wound in the left side of the chest. There is a fair possibility that
the fatality is drug-related, as there have been similar incidents in that
area. The FBI is investigating.
