Park: Assateague Location: shoreline
Reported by: Bill Supernaugh, Division of Ranger Activities, MARO
Received by: William Halainen, Division of Ranger Activities, WASO

Summary:
Recent heavy storm surf and winds have caused three sailboats to run aground
at Assateague Island this week. Earlier in the week a 42-foot sloop grounded
on the north end but was able to refloat the following day. On 4/30 a 42-foot
ocean racer grounded, again on the northern portion of the island. During the
night, a 43-foot ocean sailor ran onto the shoals off Tom's Cove, the southern
end of the island. Today salvage companies are on scene attempting to remove
the northern boat overland. A salvor is also at the south end of the park,
attempting to float that boat. No injuries, no serious damage incurred.

Park: Acadia Location: entrance station, Loop Road
Reported by: Len Bobinchock, Division of Ranger Activities, NARO
Received by: Melissa Warner, Division of Ranger Activities, WASO

Summary:
At 9:30am this morning approximately 50 individuals drove from the town of Bar
Harbour to the entrance station on the Acadia loop road (a distance of 3-4
miles). At that point they made speeches in protest of the $5.00 entrance
fee to be charged at Acadia National Park. The protesters feel the amount is
too high.

The protest was peaceful, no confrontations occurred. A petition against fees
was presented to the park superintendent who was present along with other park
staff. The group dispersed at approximately 10:30am.

Park: Denali Location: Pilgrim Mine, Stampede District
Reported by: Rich O'Guin, Division of Ranger Activities, ARO
Received by: Melissa Warner, Division of Ranger Activities, WASO

Summary:
The NPS requested an Army EOD Team to destroy 60 sacks of TNT (50 lbs ea) and
10,000 caps that were discovered as hazardous materials on the Stampede Mining
District site. The sacks were carried out approximately 30-40 yards and
detonated by the EOD Team.

A milling building, assay office, and a small building that housed tools and
equipment were totally demolished. Assessment of other damages will not be
made until the EOD Team again sweeps the entire area (1/2 to 1 square mile)
and destroys any remaining unexploded ordinance (probably will be 5/2).

No injuries, property damage minimal. EOD Team is the 176th from Ft.
Richardson, Alaska.
