Park: NCP - Central Location: Holocaust Memorial
Reported by: Duncan Morrow, Public Affairs, WASO (from NCRO PA)
Received by: Bill Halainen, Ranger Activities, WASO

Summary:
At about 8:30 this morning, a guard at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing
reported seeing a man carrying what appeared to be plastic explosives wired
for use entering the Auditor's Building.

The Park Police were asked to close 15th Street, SW, to traffic between
Independence and Maine Avenues.

It is reported by radio reporters for station WWRC that the man is alleged to
have gone into the the building, which is a Department of Agriculture
structure which houses 184 employees. The building is being evacuated and the
Metro police have closed 14th Street and the 14th Street bridge to Virginia.

There are unconfirmed reports of a possible bomb threat directed at the
Holocaust Memorial site, but the buildings at that location have already been
razed, casting doubt on the validity of the rumor.

Park: Fort Smith Location: "First Fort Smith" Trail
Reported by: Tom Crowson, Chief Ranger, FOSM (through Ken Mabry, SWRO)
Received by: Melissa Warner, Ranger Activities, WASO

Summary:
Seven cars of a train derailed while passing through the park (the Union
Pacific has a right-of-way). The cars came off the track, but did not flip
over; the engine was not involved. The park trail was closed for only 45
minutes, and it has not yet been determined whether or not any other
resource damage was sustained. A Union Pacific team arrived on scene
yesterday. By late in the afternoon, all seven cars had been removed and
track repair was underway. The cause is still unknown, but the age of the
tracks may be a factor.
