Day/date: July 14, 1987 FIELD INCIDENT REPORT Incident type: Drug Interdiction Log number: 87-157 Date/time of incident: 7/13, noon Date/time received: 7/14, 2 pm Park: Great Smokies Location: Foothills Parkway Reported by: Don Russell, Law Enforcement Specialist, SERO Received by: Dawn Dempsey, Ranger Activities, WASO Summary: As a result of an overflight by Tennessee state drug agents, a patch of marijuana was found along the parkway. Investigation revealed that 148 plants, each about 8 feet tall, were being cultivated in the plot. Chief ranger Pete Hart and his staff removed and destroyed the plants. There were no arrests and there are no suspects. He wandered away from the area and was reported missing by his grandfather at 2:30pm. Park personnel was notified and a search involving 16 foot searchers, and 1 mounted searcher was initiated immediately. No helicopters were available at that time.
