Summary:
A non-commissioned fire control aid stopped his government vehicle to assist a
visitor whose vehicle had a flat tire. The aid noticed the driver and his
passenger appeared to be intoxicated. He radioed for assistance from a road
patrol ranger who was in the vicinity. The visitors drove away (with flat
tire). The patrol ranger pursued the vehicle for a distance. The vehicle
finally stopped outside of the park because the axle had worn to a "nubbin"
and could no longer be driven. The ranger drew his weapon and asked the
individuals to get out of the car. The driver stated he had a bomb in the
vehicle and would detonate it if he was forced to leave the vehicle. At this
time additional rangers and Clallam County sheriff's deputies arrived on the
scene and blocked off the highway. The passenger of the vehicle got out and
was arrested. The driver still refused to exit. A trained police dog was
brought to the scene and lead to the passenger side of the vehicle. The
driver exited the vehicle immediately and was arrested. No bomb was found.
The vehicle was stolen from the Tacoma area.
