Park: Padre Island Location: Laguna Madre
Reported by: Bill Tanner, RAD, SWRO
Received by: Bill Halainen, RAD, WASO

Summary:
Due to increased activity by Customs agents in and near the park, Padre Island
rangers have resumed patrols aimed more at resource issues. In two days of
boat patrols on the Laguna Madre last month, rangers confiscated 7,200 feet of
illegal gill nets and 1,700 feet of illegal trot lines. Rangers report that
during those periods of time when routine boat patrols are conducted, about
5,000 feet of illegal nets are confiscated monthly. They attribute the recent
increase in illegal fishing to the decrease in patrols.
