Progress Log number: 88-48 Date/time of incident: 3/22, 2 pm Date/time received: 3/28, am Park: Crater Lake Location: Crater Rim Reported by: Ed Menning, RAD, PNRO Received by: Bill Halainen, RAD, WASO Summary: M. and K.R. signed out for a 30-mile cross-country skiing trip around the crater's rim on the afternoon of the 22nd, and said they would be back by 6 pm on the 24th. They failed to return at that time, but the park waited 24 hours before beginning a search because a day's delay is not uncommon when there are many skiiers using the trail. Preparations for a search began on the evening of the 25th, and about 65 people from the park and Klamath and Jackson Counties began a large-scale search for the couple on the morning of the 26th. The search area spread on the 27th, and 90% of the park's trails were covered. Snow and high winds precluded the use of a helicopter during the first two days of the search, but the park hoped to get one in the air yesterday. Dog teams have also been brought in. No trace has yet been found of the couple. Persons involved: Name Address DOB or age M. and K.R.
