Summary:
An off-duty North Carolina Highway Patrolman saw D.E.W., 38, of
Fletcher, North Carolina enter the parkway and drive north. A short time
later the officer came upon D.E.W.'s car after it had collided with a guard
rail. The officer found D.E.W. in the drivers seat with a gunshot wound in
his chest. A recently fired handgun and a rambling suicide note in the car
indicate that he apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while
driving.
