INCIDENTS

91-5 - Natchez Trace (Mississippi/Tennessee/Alabama) - Suicide

Early on the afternoon of January 8th, district ranger Hollis 
Morris discovered the body of R.C., 43, of Madison, 
Mississippi, in his 1981 Ford LTD at the West Boundary Turnout 
north of Jackson.  R.C. apparently shot himself with a 30/30 
rifle.  A tape recording found in the vehicle confirmed that 
R.C. had committed suicide.  [Pat Reed, CR, NATR, via

1) Former ranger Erny Kuncl was seriously injured in a skiing 
accident recently.  Although he received a life-threatening C1 
spinal fracture, he was successfully treated and is now 
recuperating at home.  If you'd like to send him a note, you can

2) The Environmental Law Institute is conducting two sessions of 
a threatened and endangered species course for the Forest 
Service in 1991, and openings are available for students from 
other agencies.  The cost of the course is $1,500, which covers 
tuition, room and board for four days.  The course will be held 
in Keystone, Colorado.  Any NPS individuals who are interested 
should contact Steve Mattox of the Environmental Law Institute
