INCIDENTS

91-76 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Poaching Conviction

On March 13th, J.G.B., 20, of Manhattan, Montana, pled
guilty in magistrate's court to the illegal killing of a bull
elk (16 USC 26) near Highway 191 in the northwest corner of the
park last fall. His codefendant, J.M., 28, of Belgrade,
Montana, failed to appear for the hearing, and a warrant for his
arrest was issued. J.G.B. and J.M. shot and killed a five-point
bull elk about five miles south of the north boundary on the
morning of November 11, 1990. Although both men are long-time
Montana residents and the boundary is prominently marked with
large signs, J.G.B. claimed that he did not know that they were in
the park. J.G.B. was fined $1,000, barred from entering the park
for three years, required to forfeit his Remington .270 rifle to
the park, and ordered to pay $1,500 restitution to the park in
lieu of forfeiture of the truck used in the incident.

91-77 - Delaware Water Gap (Pennsylvania/New Jersey) - Suspected Arson

Just before 7:00 p.m. on the 17th, the park communication center
received a report of a fire in an unoccupied historic structure
along the Delaware River about one mile south of park
headquarters. Upon arrival, responding rangers and local fire
departments found the building fully involved and adjacent
wildlands on fire. The fires were suppressed without incident.
No estimate of damages is yet available. Rangers and a
Pennsylvania state police fire marshall are investigating.
