INCIDENTS

91-81 - Carlsbad Cavern (New Mexico) - Followup on Rescue

The rescue of caver E.D.B. came to a successful
conclusion at about 1:00 a.m. today when she reached the surface
four days after breaking her leg deep in Lechuguilla Cave. She
was reported to be in great shape, and hopeful that her leg
would heal by summer so she could resume explorations of the
cave. E.D.B. was moved from The Rift, across a 40-foot-wide chasm
known as Freakout Traverse and through the Glacier Bay area
yesterday, then carried out the remaining distance well ahead of
schedule. Media interest in the rescue was both wide and
intense. [Telefaxed briefings, RAD/SWRO, 4/3; Associated Press
story, 4/4]

91-95 - Olympic (Washington) - Drug Arrests

Ranger Mike Butler arrested two men parked at an overlook on the
Hurricane Ridge Parkway for possession of drug syringes on March
30th. A search of the vehicle conducted subsequent to the
arrest led to the discovery of a variety of drugs, including
cocaine and marijuana. One of the men agreed to cooperate with
the local drug task force and the information he provided
resulted in the execution of a search warrant in a motel room in
the nearby community of Sequim. Rangers seized $6,000 in cash,
about an ounce of cocaine wrapped in individual bundles,
two .357 revolvers and a police scanner. [CompuServe message
from Bill Frazier, OLYM, 4/2]

91-96 - Saguaro (Arizona) - Suicide

A park visitor reported the discovery of a body about 200 feet
of the Hugh Norris Trail near the trailhead on the morning of
March 28th. Responding rangers and Pima County deputies found
the body of M.Y., 67, of Tucson. Investigation revealed
that M.Y. had committed suicide with a handgun, and that a
missing persons report had been filed on him in Tucson on the
26th. [Bryan Swift, CR, SAGU, via CompuServe message from Carl
Christensen, RAD/WRO, 3/29]

91-97 - Prince William (Virginia) - Suicide

On April 2nd, rangers were notified by local police that R.F.,
57, of Staunton, might be in the area, and that his
family thought that he might be suicidal. His vehicle was soon
found at Oak Ridge Campground, and rangers subsequently
discovered his body in a tent. R.F. had shot himself with a
handgun. A suicide note was found at the scene. [Telephone
report from Ed Drotos, RCR, RAD/NCRO, 4/3]

91-98 - Everglades (Florida) - Presidential Visit

The President and Mrs. Bush fished in the park this week during
their visit to the Keys. The President has made annual visits
in recent years to fish for bonefish and grouper in the grass
flats and in the deeper channels of Florida Bay. The Bushes
reportedly caught barracuda, snapper and a shark while in the
park. Rangers worked with the Secret Service and Florida Marine
Patrol to provide security for the Presidential party while they
were on the water. During the same period, Congressmen Synar of
Oklahoma and Clinger of Pennsylvania were also in the park on an
unrelated tour. [Telefax from Mark Lewis, LES, EVER, 4/3]
