FIRE ACTIVITY

1) FIRE SITUATION  Preparedness Level I

No large fire activity nationally.  Most geographic areas have 
low to moderate fire danger.  Little or no commitment of 
national resources.

3) FIRE NARRATIVES 

a) NATIONAL PARK SERVICE:

* Shirttail Fire (Wind Cave) - Lightning started a half dozen 
fires in the  Black Hills on April 3rd.  The Shirttail Fire was among them, 
and by Friday had burned into the park.  The area around park 
headquarters was burned out that night.  Snow began falling on the fire on 
Sunday.

There have been few problems, and no structures have burned.  
As of 0700 EDT today, the fire had burned 1,080 acres in the park.  It 
will be contained by this morning, and demobilization will begin later 
today.

b) OTHER AGENCIES:

* Horse Creek Fire (Black Hills NF) - The fire started on Friday 
when unexpected strong winds rekindled a prescribed burn from the 
previous day.  It should be contained today.

4) ANALYSIS - Lightning activity, coupled with high winds and 
unseasonably  warm temperatures, brought significant fire activity to the 
Black Hills.
  
5) PROGNOSIS - Fire activity is expected to continue in the Black 
Hills.  Weather forecasts are calling for high temperatures and 
possible   thunderstorms.

THIS DAY IN NPS HISTORY...

April 7, 1928 - Rangers John Bingaman and W.M. Raymann rescued 
two women from the Ledge Trail in Yosemite Valley.  One woman, 
Edna Ring, was the daughter of the Secretary of the Navy, and 
the rescue made national headlines.
