RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION MORNING REPORT Attention: Directorate Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC CC: RAD Information Net Day/date: Friday, April 12, 1991 INCIDENTS 91-107 - Ozark (Missouri) - Structural Fire Around 8:00 p.m. on April 10th, a camper reported a fire in the comfort station located at the Blue Spring parking area. Rangers responded and found that the fire had totally destroyed the structure. Damage is estimated at $20,000. About two acres of woodland also burned. Arson is suspected and an investigation of the incident is underway. [Tom Graham, CR, OZAR, via telefax from John Townsend, RAD/MWRO, 4/11] 91-108 - Coulee Dam (Washington) - Hazardous Substance Spill There was a hazardous substance spill on the Columbia River on the evening of April 10th. The spill, which occurred near the Cominco Mine in Canada approximately 15 miles from the U.S. border, was comprised of five to ten cubic meters of sulfide leaching plant residue containing zinc and cadmium. The Washington Department of Ecology has taken water samples from the river, but test results are not yet in. [CompuServe message from RAD/PNRO, 4/11] RESOURCE MANAGEMENT No reports today. THIS DAY IN NPS SAR HISTORY... April 12, 1951 - An Army pilot landed his Piper Cub on the top of Mount Rainier. The park launched a rescue effort, but the pilot took off just before rescue teams were able to reach him. The pilot was fired when it became apparent that he'd intentionally landed on the mountain.
