INCIDENTS

91-137 - Virgin Islands (Virgin Islands) - Drug Arrests

While on patrol of the waters around Buck Island Reef on April
12th, rangers spotted a rubber dinghy adrift, boarded it, and
found that it contained several containers of marijuana. An
area search of the island was made, but no suspects were found.
As they headed back to port, the rangers heard that the Coast
Guard was engaged in the recovery of a sailboat which had run
aground on the reef. They contacted the Coast Guard and found
that the dinghy belonged to the captain of the sailboat. The
sailboat was then boarded and searched. Investigation revealed
that two other men had been aboard the sailboat when it ran
aground, and that they had disembarked in the dinghy and landed
on Buck Island just before the rangers had found their boat
adrift. A search of the island led to the discovery of more
marijuana hidden in plastic bags in the jungle. All three
persons were arrested, and 462 pounds of cured marijuana was
seized. Both Customs and the NPS will file charges against the
suspects. [Bob Marriott, RAD/WASO, 4/18]

91-138 - Zion (Utah) - Successful Rescue

During the night of April 23rd, park medics Pat and Dave
Buccello responded to a report of an unconscious 14-year-old
female in the nearby community of Springdale. They were
summoned by EMT's in the town's ambulance service who recognized
the need for advanced life support for the victim. The
Buccellos found the patient near death due to a suspected
overdose of alcohol and/or drugs. They administered Narcan and
IV fluids and kept the victim's airway open during initial care
efforts and travel to the medical center 45 minutes away. The
victim's blood alcohol level was .23 when she reached the
hospital; no drugs were found in her system. According to the
attending physician, the victim would not have survived more
than another ten minutes if she had not received the ALS care
provided by the Buccellos. [Telefax from Larry Van Slyke, CR,
ZION, 4/26]

91-139 - Saguaro (Arizona) - Employee Death

Wilfred Canez, 45, a longtime equipment operator at the park,
experienced a massive cerebral hemorrhage while off duty Friday
evening, April 26th, and passed away Saturday. He is survived
by his wife. [Bill Palleck, Superintendent, SAGU, via
CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 4/29]

91-140 - Chaco Culture (New Mexico) - Drug Arrests

On the afternoon of April 15th, two park visitors saw a young
man hook a tow chain from his vehicle to the campground fee
collection box and attempt to pull it out. Upon receiving the
report of the attempted theft, Chief Ranger Harold Timmons and
Ranger Erick Beckert began a search of the park and located the
individual through the vehicle's license number, which the
visitors had provided. The vehicle was registered to a rancher
who lives about two miles south of the park and was being
operated by his visiting nephew. He was apprehended and
identified by the witnesses, then taken to the San Juan county
jail. Although he was unsuccessful in his efforts to remove the
fee box, he did inflict several hundred dollars worth of damage
to the box and the sign at the campground entrance. A hearing
is to be held on Thursday. [Telefax from Phil Young, RAD/SWRO,

91-141 - Delaware Water Gap (Pennsylvania/New Jersey) - Successful Rescue

The park dispatcher received a report of a hiker having problems
on the Appalachian Trail in the Kittatinny Subdistrict on the
afternoon of the 27th. Responding rangers found W.J.,
45, of Jackson, New Jersey, suffering from what was later
diagnosed as an acute myocardial infarction. W.J. was
with a group of Boy Scouts who were backpacking along the trail.
He was stabilized and carried out to a helispot, where he was
evacuated to a local hospital. W.J. is reported to be
resting and recovering. [Telefax from Hal Grovert, CR, DEWA,
4/29]

91-142 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Weapons Arrest

Great Onyx Job Corps officials received information that a
student was carrying a handgun at the center on April 27th. The
staff investigated and recovered a five-shot, .22 caliber
revolver from the jacket pocket of a 19-year-old student, who
claimed that he borrowed the jacket from another student.
Neither student has a known criminal history, and the recovered
weapon is not listed as stolen. The offense is a misdemeanor
under federal law. The student who owned the weapon was
immediately dismissed from the job corps program. The case will
be reviewed by the U.S. attorney. [Telefax from Bill Springer,
RAD/SERO, 4/28]
