INCIDENTS

91-168 - Buffalo (Arkansas) - Rescue

R.R., 28, of Springfield, Missouri, was hiking with
friends near Hemmed-in-Hollow on the afternoon of the 18th when he
lost his footing on the edge of a bluff and fell 50 feet into a
drainage. Members of his party contacted rangers at Kyles
campground, and a rescue operation was immediately begun in
conjunction with local paramedics, volunteers and SAR and rescue
teams. Rescuers hiked in four miles to reach Robinson.
Paramedics and park rangers provided initial emergency care,
then prepared R.R. for a two-mile carryout to a helicopter
landing zone. The helicopter transported R.R. to a regional
hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition
with multiple fractures of the left leg and arm, a punctured
lung and internal injuries. (Nell Dubbs, BUFF, via CompuServe
