INCIDENTS

91-169 - Everglades (Florida) - Marijuana Raid

On May 21st, rangers from Everglades, Big Cypress and Biscayne
participated in a joint marijuana raid on a site on Biscayne's
boundary with agents from DEA, Fish and Wildlife, and the
Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). They seized 1,478
marijuana plants with a potential value of $1.5 million from
eight separate sites. Plants ranged in size from small
seedlings to fivefoottall plants. The seizures almost equalled
the total for all seizures made in Dade County last year. The
joint raid was the culminating exercise in a joint FDLE/DEA
domestic marijuana eradication school, where rangers and
officers are taught aerial detection, ground operations, booby
traps, evidence processing, seizures and arrest procedures. A
marijuana spotter team in Everglades' contract helicopter
detected and confirmed the sites. [Telefax from Mark Lewis, LES,
Everglades, 5/22]
