INCIDENTS

91-239 - Shenandoah (Virginia) - Homicide

On the afternoon of June 24th, the park received a report that
there was a body lying along the side of Jewell Hollow Road, a
dirt road which intersects with a highway a half mile above park
headquarters. Responding rangers found a body of a woman in her
late 20's wrapped in a sheet. After closing the road to protect
the crime scene, the FBI and state police were summoned to
assist in the investigation. They determined that the victim
had been shot at least twice, and spent shell casings were found
nearby. The victim has not been identified, but investigators
did find that she was wearing a 1979 class ring from a school in
Oxon Hill, Maryland. The investigation continues. [Telefax
from Larry Hakel, CR, SHEN, 6/24]

91-240 - Yukon-Charley Rivers (Alaska) - Drug Conviction

On June 10th, F.L.W. pled guilty to state felony
charges of cultivating marijuana in the park and was sentenced
to four years in prison. His wife, K.W., pled guilty to
federal misdemeanor charges of possession of controlled
substances. F.L.W. had faced a possible sentence of up
to 60 years in prison and $60,000 in federal fines. The case
against the couple began when an informant reported their
activities in July, 1989. Fixed-wing overflights of the area in
which the plants were reportedly being grown revealed a
camouflaged greenhouse, and a surveillance operation was begun
with the assistance of rangers from six Alaskan parks. A search
warrant for the greenhouse was subsequently executed by a
multiagency task force managed by the park's chief ranger.
Although over 400 plants had originally been growing in the
greenhouse, only 61 were found and seized. [CompuServe message

91-241 - Great Smokies (Tennessee/North Carolina) - MVA with
Fatality

D.S., 31, of various addresses in North Carolina, was
killed in the early morning hours of June 21st when the car in
which he was riding was involved in an accident near the tunnel
on the Gatlinburg Spur. Alcohol was probably a contributing
factor, and the female driver may be charged with driving under
the influence. [Telephone report from Steve Alscher, RAD/SERO,
6/21]
