INCIDENTS

91-308 - Olympic (Washington) - Followup on Oil Spill

About 30,000 gallons of oil from the Tenyo Maru was reported to
be drifting in a southeasterly direction toward the Washington
coastline yesterday, but bad weather has made accurate tracking
of the slick impossible. Oil slick trajectory projections
indicate that the oil will come ashore soon. The park's staff
and the Department's regional environmental officer (REO) are
monitoring the situation. Cooperation between federal and state
agencies has been characterized as excellent. [Report from John
Donahue, OEA/WASO, 7/25]

91-326 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Drowning

Just before 8:00 p.m. on the 24th, R.F. of Beckley,
West Virginia, drowned in the New River near Terry. R.F. had
been drinking with family and friends and was reported to be
extremely intoxicated at the time of the incident. R.F., a
non-swimmer, disregarded pleas from another family member to stay
away from the river, entered the water, and disappeared almost
immediately. Rangers and divers from local ambulance and rescue
squads responded and located Farrish in the river about ten feet
from shore within 20 minutes of the incident. CPR was begun
immediately and continued until the ambulance reached a hospital
in Beckley, where R.F. was subsequently pronounced dead.
Foul play has not been ruled out at this time, and an
investigation by rangers and local sheriff's deputies is
underway. [Telefax from Rick Brown, Acting CR, NERI, 7/25]

91-327 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Marijuana Seizure

Rangers Larry Anderson and Chris Schrader found a plot of 18
marijuana plants growing in the park on July 20th. After
conducting an aroundtheclock surveillance operation for 48 hours
without results, a decision was made to terminate the operation
and remove and destroy the plants. Three more were found in the
process for a total of 21. [Telefax from Rick Brown, Acting CR,
NERI, 7/25]

91-328 - Tuzigoot (Arizona) - Sexual Assault

Early on the morning of July 23rd, a woman walking along the
Tuzigoot entrance rode was attacked and raped by an assailant
with a knife. She was subsequently released along the Verde
River, not far from the scene of the attack. The victim
reported the incident to Clarkdale police, who conducted an
investigation along with rangers and a crime lab unit from the
Arizona Department of Public Safety. A suspect was taken into
custody late on the evening of the 23rd. [Dwayne Collier, SOAR,
via CompuServe message from Carl Christensen, RAD/WRO, 7/25]

91-329 - Crater Lake (Oregon) - Car Clouts

Sometime during the early morning hours of July 22nd, at least
eight cars in the Mazama campground were hit by car clouters. A
preliminary investigation indicated that between $600 and $700
was stolen. The clouters gained entry into the vehicles with a
pry tool, removed cash from wallets and purses found on vehicle
floors, then moved on. Credit cards and other items of value
were bypassed in favor of cash. It is believed that this was an
organized operation. The thieves may have stolen a Golden Eagle
Passport bearing the name of L.V. and may attempt to use
it to gain access to other federal areas. Additional details
will be forthcoming pending further interviews with victims. No
suspects have been identified at this time. For further
information, contact ranger Doug Raeburn at 503-594-2211. [Doug
Raeburn, CRLA, via SEAdog message from Mike Blankenship,
RAD/PNRO, 7/25]

Alaska also has 11 fires under modified suppression strategy for
338,766 acres and 42 fires under limited suppression for 544,779 acres.

NOTES:

Fires - Asterisk indicates newly reported fire (on this report).
T1 and T2 indicate assigned Type I and Type II Teams.

Status - The following abbreviations are employed:

NR No report received MS Modified suppression strategy
 CN Contained MN Being monitored
CL Controlled NEC No estimate of containment
 CS Confinement strategy DM Demobed

3) 1990/1991 COMPARATIVE ACTIVITY SUMMARY

							Fires Acres

	1990 (Year-to-date) 39,692 2,067,136
	1991 (Year-to-date) 41,694 1,637,527
	1990-1991 (% difference) + 5% 21%

4) ANALYSIS - The Northwest, Idaho, Nevada and northern
California continue to report many new lightningcaused ignitions.
The total acreage burned has been small because of the heavy
rains associated with most thunderstorms.

5) PROGNOSIS - Initial attack forces will likely remain busy with
new ignitions from predicted lightning activity and with
holdover fires from past lightning strikes.
