INCIDENTS

91-332 - Coronado (Arizona) - Followup on Marijuana Arrests

On July 25th, rangers arrested R.R., owner of the
Montezuma Ranch, a park inholding, for cultivation and sale of
marijuana. The park was advised last week that DEA and U.S.
Marshals planned to serve a seizure warrant on the entire ranch,
which is comprised of two houses and 82 acres of land, sometime
on the afternoon of September 13th. The property, which will
become the possession of the U.S. Marshals Service until further
adjudication by the courts, is valued at approximately $600,000.

91-481 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Followup on Search

A search was begun on September 9th for M.T.K., an
employee of the park's fence contractor, after the park was
notified that he'd walked off a project on Mauna Loa a week
earlier. A detailed search of all vegetated areas in the
primary search area was conducted on the 12th, but no clues were
found. Air and foot searches centering on lava tubes and open
skylights were equally fruitless. The park's search efforts
have accordingly been suspended until new information is
received. County personnel were to continue searching the area
on the 13th, but planned on suspend their efforts if no signs of
M.T.K. were found. An NPS helicopter search and infrared
radar scan of the area was scheduled for the 13th, but was
canceled due to lack of equipment. [Jim Martin, CR, HAVO, via

91-482 - Glen Canyon (Arizona/Utah) - Flood Damage

A strong low pressure area centered over northern Arizona on
September 6th produced extremely heavy rains over a wide area
and caused some damage to the park. Roads were blocked by mud
flows and flood waters in and around Lees Ferry and Page, and a
flash flood in Bridge Canyon near Rainbow Bridge blocked a
section of the path from the floating walkway to the bridge and
damaged the walkway. Visitors were barred from the area for
several hours. A full damage assessment will be made over the
next few days. The trail was reopened on September 7th.

91-483 - Glen Canyon (Arizona/Utah) - Trailer Fire

Shortly before midnight on September 5th, a mobile home at
Bullfrog owned by ARA, the park concessioner, caught fire. The
sole occupant, 34-year-old C.C., was aroused from sleep
on the front room couch by ARA employees. After several
attempts, C.C. was finally able to exit the burning trailer
through the front door. He was taken to the University of Utah
burn center, where he is in serious condition with first and
second degree burns on 30% of his body and third degree burns on
his head and feet. C.C. is also suffering from severe
respiratory problems from inhaling hot gases. One ARA employee
who attempted to rescue C.C. sustained a severe laceration
to his right forearm; surgery was required to repair the damage.
C.C. told investigators that he was frying potatoes in oil
on the kitchen stove when he laid down on the couch and fell
asleep. Alcohol was involved. The park and ARA fire brigades
knocked down the fire. [CompuServe message from Larry Clark, CR,
GLCA, 9/14]

91-484 - Colonial (Virginia) - Suicide

A ranger on routine patrol discovered a suicide note in an
unattended vehicle on the west tour road in Yorktown shortly
before dark on September 12th. A brief search led to the
discovery of the body of W.B., 49, of nearby Poquoson,
Virginia. The cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the
head. Preliminary investigation indicates that Barden shot
himself. [CompuServe message from Jim Burnett, COLO, 9/13]
