INCIDENTS

91-534 - Yosemite (California) - Search in Progress

Search efforts were begun on Saturday, September 28th, for
W.L., 68, of Denair, California, who failed to return
as scheduled from a day hike on the 27th. W.L. was last seen
on Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the junction of Mirror Lake loop and
the Snow Creek trail in Yosemite Valley. He intended to hike up
the Snow Creek trail, probably to North Dome but possibly to the
Tioga Road or elsewhere, and was to return in the evening.
W.L. is reported to be in good shape, has no known medical
problems, and was wellequipped for a day hike. As of the time
of the report, there were 125 individuals involved in the search,
including three helicopters and crews, seven dog teams, six
volunteer search organizations, and employees from Yosemite,
Sequoia-Kings Canyon, and Joshua Tree. [Scott Erickson, CR, YOSE,

91-535 - Yosemite (California) - Burglary

On September 28th, Yosemite Park and Curry Company security
officers and auditors discovered that $12,700 had been stolen
from a drop safe at Degnan's Deli. The theft occurred some time
between 8:00 a.m. on the 27th and 8:00 a.m. on the 28th. The
safe was located within a secured room which was alarmed at the
time of the theft. Law enforcement rangers and Curry security
officers are working jointly on the case. [J.R. Tomasovic, YOSE,

91-536 - Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) - Vandalism

Vandals knocked the head off the statue on the monument to the
2nd U.S. Sharpshooters (Andrews' Company, 5th Corps) at the
south end of the park sometime before midnight on September 29th.
The statue apparently broke after it was repeatedly struck with
a tree branch. Investigation into the incident is underway. A
$1,250 reward is being offered for information leading to the
arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for
the damage. The Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides,
which operates in the park, has contributed $250 of the reward
offering. This is the fifth act of vandalism to monuments in
the park this year. [CompuServe message from Mac Heebner, CR,
GETT/EISE, 10/1]

91-537 - Glen Canyon (Utah/Arizona) - Arrest for Embezzlement

On September 16th, rangers joined Kane County sheriff's
department officers in the investigation of N.D., a night
auditor for ARA Leisure Services who was suspected of embezzling
$17,000 of the company's money. N.D. was subsequently arrested
at Bullfrog and charged with seven counts of felony theft. Most
