RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Badlands (South Dakota) - Bison Roundup

From October 11th to the 14th, about 20 personnel from all of the park's divisions participated in
the culling of excess bison from the park and the subsequent transfer of 262 of the animals to the
Oglala Sioux and Cheyenne River Sioux through cooperative agreements with those tribes. The
bison are used in religious and festive ceremonies and for a variety of commercial enterprises,
provision of seed animals to establish new herds, and development of breeding stock. There are
now about 400 bison in the park, a number within the estimated carrying capacity of 500 animals.
During the last four years, over 1,000 animals valued in excess of $1 million have been given to
Sioux tribes in South Dakota. [Bruce P. Bessken, BADL]
