INCIDENTS

91-607 - Cape Hatteras (North Carolina) - Follow-up on Body Discovery

On November 1st, a body wrapped in plastic, duck tape and a yellow polypro
line washed ashore south of Cape Hatteras lighthouse. The body was
subsequently taken to a state office for an autopsy. It has since been
determined that the victim was a small-framed woman who was about 55 years
old and that she was strangled to death. An interagency homicide
investigation is being conducted by the county, state and park. [Telephone
report from Steve Alscher, LES, RAD/SERO, 11/8]

91-609 - Glacier (Montana) - Poaching Arrests

On the afternoon of November 9th, visitors looking at a mountain goat
through binoculars from a bridge over the Middle Fork of the Flathead River
heard a gun shot and saw the goat fall to its death. They subsequently
reported the incident to rangers and an investigation into the incident was
begun. At 3:00 a.m. the following morning, rangers Kyle Johnson, Charlie
Logan and Curt Frain arrested D.M., 38, and J.R., 34, in
the Walton area and charged them with illegally killing an adult female
mountain goat and with illegal possession of weapons in the park. A 1983
Chevrolet Camaro was seized at the time of the arrest, and a 1990 Dodge
Dakota pickup was subsequently seized during the execution of a search
warrant. The pair appeared before a magistrate on November 12th and pled
not guilty to the poaching charges. Bail was set at $1,000 for each
defendant. [Telefaxed press releases from Amy Vanderbilt, GLAC, 11/12 and
11/13]

91-610 - Gateway (New York) - Employee Death

Officer Hyman R. "Buck" Rosen of the Park Police's New York field office
died on November 7th following a long battle against brain cancer. Rosen,
39, had served in the Park Police since 1977. He leaves his wife, Irene, a
commissioned ranger at Fire Island, and his 21-month-old daughter Samantha.
An education fund has been established for Samantha; contributions may be
made by contacting the New York field office at FTS 665-4241. [Telefax
from Dale Dickerhoof, USPP, GATE, 11/8]

91-611 - Lava Beds (California) - Rescue

W.D., 18, a life-long asthmatic, went into severe respiratory
distress while inside Catacomb Cave on November 9th. Rangers Harris and
Toops responded, provided oxygen, and help W.D. administer a companion's
medicine for the same condition. After he began to show improvement, he
was assisted from the cave and taken to a medical center in Klamath Falls,
Oregon. Doctors attributed his survival to the quick actions of W.D.'s
companions and the rangers. [Terry Harris, CR, LABE, via CompuServe
message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 11/13]

91-612 - Point Reyes (California) - Structural Fires

Two abandoned wooden buildings at the Jensen oyster farm were consumed by
fire on the night of November 11th. One building was a total loss, and the
second incurred major damage. The park is currently waiting for clearance
to tear both down. The buildings had not been in use and apparently had
been heavily vandalized in the past. Arson is suspected. [Leeroy Brock,
CR, PORE, via CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 11/12]
