INCIDENTS

96-41 - Rocky Mountain (Colorado) - Follow-up on Search for Downed Aircraft

On March 9th, two members of the park's SAR team reached the wreckage of the
twin-engine aircraft which went down in the park during a snow storm on the
evening of January 31st. The wreckage lies on a 70 degree slope near the
summit of 13,514-foot Ypsilon Mountain in the north central area of the park.
Although the pilot's remains were found, park officials ruled out any further
recovery efforts due to the airplane's position just below unstable snow
cornices. [Doug Caldwell, PIO, ROMO]

96-97 - Glen Canyon (Arizona/Utah) - Larceny/Fraud Arrest

A routine background investigation conducted by the park's concessioner on
M.R., 32, a newly-hired boat mechanic, turned up information which
lead to an investigation by rangers Russ Miller and Steve Luckesen. The
rangers learned that M.R. was wanted on an Oregon warrant for parole
violations and for the theft of a U-Haul truck, and that he was suspected of
theft and fraud in New Hampshire. During an interview with M.R. at his
concession-owned housing, Miller and Luckesen saw a computer which matched
the description of one reported as stolen from Roger's New Hampshire
employer. A consent search led to the discovery of a printer and evidence of
stolen and forged checks which were also on the list of items stolen from New
Hampshire. Other evidence was found which indicated that M.R. had been
involved in a fraudulent scheme involving a non-existent marina operation in
New Hampshire. The rangers also learned that M.R. was a convicted felon
with an extensive criminal record. He was arrested and turned over to the
county sheriff's office. [Tomie Lee, CR, GLCA]

OPERATIONAL NOTES

Pipelines - The Geological Resources Division has completed a survey of
petroleum and natural gas pipelines within and near NPS areas. They've
identified 228 pipelines in 56 parks in 30 states; 142 carry natural gas and
another 86 transport petroleum liquids. They are seeking park review of the
listing to assure that it is accurate and to apprise them of any resource or
management issues that the pipelines may be causing parks. Contact Pat
O'Dell at NP-WASO-GRD on cc:Mail to obtain a copy of the list.

OBSERVATIONS

Today's park-related quote was provided by Hal Grovert, Yosemite:

"The sight that flashed into view as we surmounted the hillock was one of the
most amazing visions ever beheld by mortal eyes. The whole valley as far as
the eye could reach was full of hundreds, no thousands, literally tens of
thousands of smokes curling up from its fissured floor...Pictures cannot
bring back the Valley of the Smokes. They have lost the awesomeness that
lies in the setting. You may build in memory, but never reproduce the scenes
which lie beyond the Katmai Pass. They seem too big to be part of the rest
of the world. They do not connect up with the little things which are built
into our lives."
