INCIDENTS

96-143 - Boston (Massachusetts) - Special Event

On March 28th, Her Majesty's Royal Yacht Britannia arrived at Charlestown
Navy Yard for a diplomatic and goodwill visit. The yacht was berthed astern
of the USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides," and opposite USS Cassin Young, the
park's World War II destroyer. Highlights of the ship's twelve-day stay were
"Beat Retreat" performances by the Royal Marine Band and a three-day visit by
His Royal Highness Prince Andrew. As the primary law enforcement agency
responsible for the protection of Prince Andrew and the yacht during their
stay in Boston, the park coordinated a multi-agency law enforcement effort
that involved eight agencies, including the State Department, Coast Guard,
Navy, and the Royal Protection Division of the Metropolitan Police of Great
Britain. A nine-member SET from the Northeast Field Area augmented park
staff. Hundreds of people came to see the yacht each day. There were no
significant incidents during the visit. The park reports that the event was
a "textbook example" of interagency coordination. [Marc Vagos, CR, BOST]

96-144 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - EMS Incident; Life Saved

South Rim rangers responded to a report of a man with chest pains and
difficulty in breathing at Mather Point on April 6th. They began
administering advanced cardiac life support treatment to A.L., 49,
of Rego Park, New York, then transported him to the park's clinic. During
the trip, A.L.'s condition rapidly deteriorated and he went into full arrest.
Rangers and clinic staff began CPR and restored A.L.'s pulse. He was flown
by helicopter to Flagstaff Medical Center, where he was treated and later
released. Although A.L. suffered an acute myocardial infarction, the damage
to his heart was minimal because of rapid transport and treatment with
thrombolytic drugs. [Dave Brennan, SDR, South Rim Subdistrict, GRCA]

OPERATIONAL NOTES

NPS Directory - The computerized directory of parks and offices that was
disseminated Servicewide in January has been corrected and updated. The new
version is now available. Send a message to Betsy Chittenden at NP-WASO-POPS
with the single word FONELIST on the subject line (not in the message text)
and a copy will be sent automatically within minutes. The entire file, even
though compressed, is still 270,000 bytes. You may want to time the
submission of your request accordingly. Her system will be left on until 11
p.m. EDT daily (when the local network shuts down) in order to accommodate
late evening requests. The next version of the directory will be distributed
in August. Until that time, you can get the latest information on the NPS
internal World Wide Web page at http://www.nps.gove/INSIDE/. [Betsy
Chittenden, WASO]
