INCIDENTS

96-549 - North Cascades (Washington) - Death of Employee

Supervisory park ranger Karan Bakke was killed on Friday, September 20th,
while returning home from her job in the wilderness office at Marblemount.
Reports indicate that she was driving west on SR 20 when an eastbound driver
crossed the center line, hitting Karan's vehicle head-on. Alcohol may have
been a factor. She was transported to Sedro-Woolley, but died while being
flown by helicopter to a Bellingham hospital. She is survived by her
husband, Doug, a son, eight, and a daughter, eleven. Karan had worked as an
interpretive ranger at North Cascades since 1991, first at Sedro-Woolley
headquarters, then at Marblemount. Before joining the NPS, she'd worked for
the Forest Service in Sedro-Woolley and for BLM and the Postal Service.
Graveside services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Saxon Cemetery in
Sedro-Woolley. The family has suggested that donations be made to The Nature
Conservancy in Karan's memory. Cards may be sent to D.B.

96-550 - Yosemite (California) - Pipe Bomb

On the morning of September 11th, rangers received a report of a male
concession employee carrying a pipe bomb. Two informants said that they'd
just seen the bomb and that the employee, G.W., had threatened
another employee and was en route to plant the bomb at the person's
residence. Rangers Gary Ingram and Brian Smith subsequently confronted
G.W. as he left a dormitory room. A partially disassembled but
functional pipe bomb was found on his person. He was taken into custody and
booked into the Yosemite jail on charges of carrying an explosive device in
an occupied residential dormitory. G.W. had been arrested two days
previously for being under the influence and for interfering with agency
functions. On September 18th, he pled guilty in federal court to multiple
counts in both cases and was sentenced to 120 days in custody and 24 months'
probation. [Brian Smith, YOSE]

96-551 - Cape Lookout (North Carolina) - Park Boat Explosion

An unoccupied park boat tied up at a dock exploded on September 20th. The
22-foot Hancock Skimmer had just returned from an operational assignment.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the explosion may have stemmed from
problems with the bilge pump and internal fuel tanks. A joint state and
Coast Guard investigation is pending. A similar park boat has been taken out
of service until the investigation is completed. The boat is manufactured in
Sea Level, North Carolina, and is not believed to be in service at any other
NPS areas. Similarly configured boats may be employed at some parks,
however. [Chuck Harris, CR, CALO]
