INCIDENTS

96-580 - C&O Canal (Maryland/D.C.) - Accidental Death of Employee

Maintenance employee Nelson Griffith, 62, of Luray, Virginia, was fatally
injured while removing trees from the canal's towpath near Lock Five on the
morning of Sunday, October 6th. At the time of the accident, he was
attempting to cut a large tree stump, which apparently broke free and fell on
him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Nelson had worked for the NPS for
30 years. An investigation into the accident is underway. [Bill Lynch, LES,
NCSO]

96-581 - FLETC (Georgia) - Serious Employee Injury

Park Police recruit officer Richard Holman, 25, a student at FLETC in Glynco,
Georgia, was critically injured in a motor vehicle accident near St. Simon's
Island around 10 p.m. on October 4th. Holman and three other Park Police
recruit officers were in a car which was struck head-on by another vehicle
which had crossed into their lane. A teenage passenger in the second vehicle
was killed in the accident. Holman was transported to Greater Southeast
Hospital, where he is in critical condition with severe head injuries. The
other three officers received minor injuries and were treated and released.
Holman was scheduled to graduate from FLETC in November. [Bill Lynch, LES,
NCSO]

96-582 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Air Crash with Four Fatalities

A Cessna 172 crashed adjacent to the South Entrance Road just before 9 a.m.
on Saturday, October 5th, killing all four occupants. The private plane,
which had been rented by the pilot, took off from Grand Canyon Airport just
south of the park at 8:45 a.m. and was bound for Page, Arizona. The pilot
reported that he was having difficulty gaining altitude and apparently tried
to land in the road corridor. The plane caught fire upon impact. The crash
was witnessed by a ranger; park, airport and other emergency response
personnel were therefore on the scene immediately. The fire was
extinguished, hazardous materials mitigation was begun, and the area was
secured. A two-mile section of the road was closed for eight hours, but the
park was accessible via a detour through Grand Canyon Village. NTSB
investigators are on scene. The four occupants of the plane were European
nationals. The county sheriff's office is making final identification and
notifying next of kin. Media coverage was extensive. The IC was Dan
Oltrogge. [Mallory Smith, GRCA]

96-583 - Lava Beds (California) - Conviction; Threats Against Employee

On June 2nd, B.S., 31, was contacted for multiple violations
within the park. During his arrest and transport, B.S. threatened
ranger Kirk Gebicke and other law enforcement officers, stating that he would
return with a militia group and kill Gebicke and any other officer he should
find. B.S. was booked and later released. When he failed to appear in
court, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Employing information gained
from local residents on B.S.'s whereabouts, Gebicke and ranger Terry
Harris served the warrant and arrested B.S. on October 1st. He entered
guilty pleas on all charges in magistrate's court and was sentenced to two
days in jail and $700 in fines. Threats of militia retribution such as those
made by B.S. are becoming more common in field contacts in the local
area. [CR, LABE]
