OPERATIONAL NOTES

Integrated Solid Waste Management Program Handbook - The Park Facility
Management Division in WASO recently distributed 400 copies of a new NPS
solid waste management handbook to waste management points of contact in
SSO's for dissemination to the field. The handbook provides important
technical information concerning proper implementation of a park's integrated
solid waste management (ISWM) program. ISWM involves using a combination of
techniques to manage the solid waste stream, based on the premise that the
waste stream is made up of distinct components that can be managed and
disposed of separately. Among the many topics covered in the handbook are:

     o Cost-effective trash collection practices.
o Waste prevention and recycling strategies.
     o Composting management.
     o Disposal facility management.
o Special waste materials, such as tires, batteries, scrap metals, oils,
       solvents and anti-freeze.
     o Employee/visitor education strategies.

If you don't have a copy and would like one - or would like further
information on the program - please contact either Fred Sturniolo or Hank
Brightman by cc:Mail or at 202-343-7040. [John Gingles, PFMD/WASO]
