INCIDENTS

97-127 - Valley Forge NHP (Pennsylvania) - Attempted Sexual Assault

On March 26th, rangers received a report of a disturbance at the park visitor
center. Ranger Croce Volpe contacted L.W., who said that a man had
grabbed her from behind while she was walking on the park's multi-use trail.
The man told L.W. that he wanted her to come with him; she instead ran to
the visitor center, with the man, subsequently identified as one J.M.,
in pursuit. Volpe questioned J.M., who confessed to attempting to abduct
L.W.. Investigation revealed that J.M. had a prior conviction for rape.
He was arrested and locked up in a township prison. J.M. faces charges of
aggravated assault, simple assault, unlawful detention and terroristic
threats. [CRO, VAFO, 4/1]

97-128 - Cuyahoga Valley NRA (Ohio) - Pipe Bomb Explosion

A pipe bomb exploded in a garbage can at the Maplewood picnic area some time
between 9 p.m. on March 29th and 7 a.m. the following morning. Although
estimates are that the bomb was small (about four inches long and two inches
in diameter), it destroyed a heavy duty, animal proof garbage can. The can
was about the size of a standard Postal Service mail drop box and was built
of heavy gauge steel. The lid was found about 17 feet from the can.
Rangers, the park's criminal investigator and ATF agents are investigating.
If you've had similar incidents in your park recently, please contact ranger
Richard Vasquez at 216-526-5256. [Lois Neff, ADR, CUVA, 4/1]

97-129 - President's Park (DC) - Special Event

President and Mrs. Clinton hosted the annual Easter egg roll on the south
lawn of the White House on March 31st (White House grounds are administered
by the NPS). Over 25,000 colorful wooden eggs were distributed to children
attending the traditional event. Activities were held on both the Ellipse
and on the south lawn. Logistics for the event were coordinated by the White
House, the NPS and the Secret Service. [Margaret Chandler, IO, PRPA, 4/1]
