RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Bandelier NM (New Mexico) - Fire-Related Impacts to Archeological Sites

Significant erosion stemming from vegetation lost during last spring's Dome
Fire is causing serious erosion problems that are threatening archeological
sites in the park. The fire stripped the thin top soil of grass, brush,
trees and an organic layer containing their seeds. The burned area in
Bandelier includes 422 known archeological sites, although there could be as
many as 600 within the fire perimeter. About 300 sites have been examined
since the fire; 172 were burned, and 48 required immediate treatment, mainly
for erosion control. Another four to six sites need emergency excavation. A
full assessment of the sites will have to wait until the snow melts and the
ground thaws, but some problems will have to be resolved before the heavy
rains that come in July and August. [Elizabeth Mozzillo, Charise Sydoriak,
BAND, 4/24]
