CURRENT SITUATION

Large fire activity increased in the Southwest yesterday; initial attack
increased in Florida. There was little fire activity elsewhere.

NATIONAL OUTLOOK

A cold front will move into northern Florida bringing partly cloudy skies
with scattered showers and thundershower in the north. High temperatures
will be in the 80s. An upper trough of low pressure will be over southern
California, bringing mostly sunny skies with a chance of afternoon
thundershowers. A stationary surface front will be over New Mexico and
northern Arizona. New Mexico will be partly cloudy and cooler with numerous
showers and thunderstorms. Scattered afternoon and evening thundershowers
are forecast for Arizona. High temperatures for the Southwestern states will
range from the 60s and 70s in the mountains to the 90s and near 100 in the
southern deserts. A low pressure system will move out of the Great Lake
States into New England. This will cause scattered showers, windy conditions
and cooler temperatures. Highs for the Great Lakes states will reach into
the upper 40s and 50s and near 60 in Minnesota.

OPERATIONAL NOTES

WASO Address Change - The mail room for the Washington Office is being
relocated from North Capitol Street to Main Interior this weekend. As part
of the consolidation, the NPS will be gradually phasing out it current post
office box address; that is, Box 37127, Washington, DC, 20013. it will
continue to be used as long as necessary to accommodate offices that require
it, but all employees should begin using the new address: National Park
Service, 1849 C Street N.W., Washington, D.C. 20240. [Carlos Vargas, WASO]

Magazine Issue on National Parks - The spring, 1997, issue of Orion Magazine,
an environmental literary quarterly, features a series of articles on the
future of the national parks. Articles by several authors, including Edward
Grumbine, Paul Schullery and John Elder, look at both successes and
challenges. The magazine is distributed nationally by Eastern News
(1-800-221-3148). [Orion Magazine]

EXCHANGE

Horse Available - Lena, Saguaro NP's 14-year-old sorrel mare, is being
retired from the NPS due to recurring bouts of lameness and inability to
regularly travel up mountains. While she may be okay for light duty, the vet
says the condition of her right legs indicate that she could have recurring
bouts of lameness with heavy use. Presently she has been out of regular
riding service for a year. She is available now. Tack is not included. The
receiving park will have to pay for transportation. If you are interested,
please contact Robin Stoddard via cc:Mail or at 520-733-5105.
